It’s 2am and I’m flipping through channels on TV, when I come across the documentary “Nas, Time Is Illmatic”.
If you haven’t seen this movie and you are a Nas fan you gotta check it out. It was interesting to learn more about, in my opinion, one of the top 10 emcees of all time. But, it also reminded me why I love the real hip hop of the 90’s.
I have to be honest in saying that a lot of todays popular hip hop is not very good. It seems like the more time goes by the more ignorant the lyrics. Sure there are some talented emcees out there from this newer generation like Drake, Kendrick, J Cole, Lupe etc… but not one are no where near on the level of someone like Nas’s lyrics on Illmatic. It makes me wonder, will anyone ever make a record as good as the great ones of the 90s?
Will the 90s go down in history as the greatest era for hip hop? Biggie, Rakim, Tribe, Nas, Big Daddy Kane, De La, Gang Starr, Pac and many more made albums that weren’t just good, they were incredible! Was the bar set so high that no one will ever be able to compete?
Or is it that intelligent lyrics are not as much of a priority to the artist and the labels they are signed to?
