Opinions are like assholes…everyone has one!
It never ceases to amaze me how many people that are not DJs think they know better then us. I mean I understand, you own the club and you’re the one writing the check, but WE get paid the big bucks to know what to play and when to play it.
I find it funny that they book us for our skills and knowledge but still often want to tell us what to and not to play. Why is this? Ego? Or is it something much more sinister than that?
In the 20+ years I have been DJing at venues, I have noticed a great deal of stereotyping that has gone on for as long back as I can remember.
Some club owners want a particular type of crowd in the club. They often discriminate against age, class, sexual orientation and race. No question in my mind that any type of discrimination is wrong! But besides the obvious reasons why this makes me upset, it never ceases to amaze me that THEY think what you play and what you don’t play will determine what type of problems they could possibly have.
Don’t get me wrong. If you are in a venue that is full of various “gangstas” then music can sometimes insight drunk people to cause trouble, especially when it is gang affiliated. I have seen it happen in Los Angeles in particular. But music doesn’t create fights, people do. Furthermore people of every background, creed, gender and color are capable of causing problems especially when alcohol is involved.
So please stop discriminating and let us DJs play to a crowd the way we know how to.
