[OPINION] TOP 10 MOST ANNOYING THINGS THAT DJs EXPERIENCE AT THE CLUB
We’ve seen various versions of this list everywhere….so we polled the Mix Syndicate DJs about the most annoying things we experience at the clubs….check out our Top 10! (in no particular order)
01.) “IF YOU PLAY MY SONG, EVERYONE WILL DANCE”
…okay, most likely, the dance floor is already packed if you’re asking the DJ to play YOUR song. If the song is a hot one, it will most likely be played….please let the DJ work!
02.) “DO YOU HAVE A PHONE CHARGER?”
…please do not ask the DJ to charge your phone!!! If we’re charging anyone’s phone it’s our own and we’re NOT gonna be responsible for your phone. Either charge your phone before you get to the club or invest in a battery backup.
03.) “CAN I LEAVE MY COAT BACK THERE?”
…please do not ask the DJ to store your coat, jacket, purse, etc. That’s why the club has a coat check. If the club doesn’t have a coat check, ya better leave that coat in your car BEFORE you enter the club.
04.) “CAN YOU PLAY MY SINGLE, IT’S HOT”
…our job as a DJ is to play what will make people dance. No offense to the hungry artists out there, but a DJ is taking a HUGE risk by playing a song at the club he/she hasn’t listened to first. It could kill the dance floor if not properly introduced. If you want a DJ to play your track, network with the DJ on a different level. Share your track and allow the DJ to provide feedback…if he/she feels the track is hot, may it’ll get some play next week….don’t shove your mixtape/demo in his/her face at the club.
05.) “IT’S MY BIRTHDAY, CAN YOU PLAY THE BIRTHDAY SONG?”
…we are so happy it’s your birthday! Some DJs will have no problems giving you a shoutout, others will not since it will “open Pandora’s Box”….when it becomes EVERYONE’s BIRTHDAY and the DJ is shouting out every “Tom, Dick, and Harry” throughout the night. Bottom Line: Every Venue/DJ is different and you may or may not get a shoutout….deal with it……oh and “The Birthday Song” isn’t an actual song title…if you’re lucky enough to get a birthday shoutout, make sure you request an actual song. (ie: “In Da Club” – 50 Cent, “Say Ahh” – Trey Songz, etc.)
06.) COME UP AND HUM A SONG YOU WANT TO HEAR BECA– USE YOU DON’T REMEMBER THE NAME.
…do we really need to elaborate this one? We don’t have the time or patience to play “Name That Tune” with you while we work…know your song BEFORE you ask the DJ to play it.
07.) TAP US ON THE SHOULDER OR STAND OVER US WHEN WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF BLENDING A RECORD.
…please DO NOT TOUCH the DJ! We’re not violent people, but when you “poke” us like we’re farm animals, be prepared to get snapped at. If the DJ is scratching, blending, etc., let them work BEFORE you make your approach to request your song.
08.) SHOVE YOUR PHONE IN FRONT OF OUR FACE WITH YOUR REQUEST.
…not sure when this trend started, but this is a no-no. Showing us a song from your Pandora or Spotify playlist on your phone is the easiest way to get it smacked outta your hand. Make a request like a normal person. (Hope you have a phone protection plan.)
09.) REQUEST A SONG, THEN “MEAN MUG” THE DJ FROM THE DANCE FLOOR UNTIL THE SONG IS PLAYED.
…we are DJs, not a jukebox….requesting a song and expecting it to be played next is obsurd. The DJ knows what he/she is doing and most likely has the next three to five songs already lined up. You standing on the dance floor with your arms crossed staring at the DJ is an easy way to NEVER get your track played.
10.) REQUEST A SONG, BUT DON’T DANCE TO THE SONG WHEN IT’S PLAYED.
…so why the holy hell did you request the song? If you do this and the DJ notices, don’t you dare request another song for the rest of the night.
